    Some great archive shots - always a shame the final frame has to be smothered with promos. It was a bit of a shame some of the old merchant's houses couldn't be saved from the slum clearances - but I am often amazed at how clean the streets are, even amid such destitution. Very interesting.

    yeah im sure in those days there wasn't even concrete everywhere, some places still had stones, and dirt would collect, people would throw their trash outside, and you had literally hogs roaming the street eating leftovers. This is what they often don't get when they have movies set in the 1900's in the slums. Hell, even in the 1920's 30's and 40's city streets in NYC had to be filthy as hell still. Maybe not downtown, but low incom areas? forget about it. I think gangs of NY was probably the most accurate because scorsese always look for authenticity.

    3:28 Unforgivable that these woman would turn to prostitution just to survive, if they had any self respect they should have become doctors, lawyers, airline pilots or even swallowed their pride a gone into dentistry. With so many opportunities available choosing prostitution was just lazy and selfish when they should have gone on to higher education! I can’t believe the choices some of these ladies made and just for the sake of not starving to death or having a roof to live under…unforgivable! Fortunately that doesn’t happen in this day and age! We should be so proud of ourselves..in fact, let’s all pat ourselves on the back for our understanding and compassion. We’re so enlightened

    Let’s be factual, laws were and are enacted by repressive conservative governments, then & now, for the protection of property by the property owning class and were and are indifferent to the trials & tribulations of the other 95% of the population. This situation is assisted by the working class tory voter every time.

    It must be some detail about how the work houses operated that they took poor Mr Hussey to the work house instead of to a hospital. Did hospitals not exist there yet? Or was the guy too poor and wretched to be permitted inside of one... a real shame that this sort of thing still occurs today.

    • @laurensteenkamp7693
      @laurensteenkamp7693 20 годин тому

      Sadly with the events of this video happened at least 50 years before the NHS was founded, as a result anyone whom didn't have steady jobs (aka decently paid, year round work) wouldn't be able to pay for a stay in hospital. So Mr Hussey being taken to the workhouse isn't surprising, the workhouse infirmary was the only place most people could afford to go for 'healthcare' as it was free. Unfortunately, as well as it being a place for women in labour (whom couldn't be gotten to the nearest mother and baby homes) and those near death many workhouse infirmaries were treated as a dumping ground for those with mental health issues and severe disabilities whose families couldn't afford to send them to asylums/ specialist colonies in the countryside

    I’m debating, with my heart and soul, about the brother “chucking” his younger brother into The River Thames if it was mercy, or murder. I cannot imagine what he was thinking when he “chucked” his brother into The River Thames. I think that children had it the worst, because they didn’t have any laws protecting them, and they had to do what they needed to do in order to survive. Yet, I don’t think they should have been executed for stealing food. I can’t imagine digging up a diseased cow, with the stomach turning smell, in order to sell the meat and get some money to stave off starvation, or homelessness. That, right there, posed a huge risk to the health of other people. Now, in today’s world, the prices of EVERYTHING is skyrocketing will cause people to do whatever they have to do to make it. We’re seeing poverty growing more and more, and the governments are doing nothing to curb the inflation. The rich are having zero problems, and the middle-class and poor are suffering. I can only hope and pray that things turn around, for all of us, and the poverty levels are eradicated. My firm belief is that politicians SHOULD NOT be allowed to own their own businesses while being a politician, own stocks, live in gated and armed security neighborhoods, or have armed security personnel. They SHOULD reside in neighborhoods where their constituents live, living on what they earn as a politician, and have to experience what their constituents experience. Maybe then they’ll understand why we’re so angry a them!!

    Poverty is still a crime and if we don't pay attention to all the right wing propaganda and fight for the rights of everyone, we will soon live in a dark time again.....

    Just came back from Edinburgh, spent 3 nights in a 3rd story AirBnB flat about 50 yards down from the castle gate in the old town. Took a tour called the "city of death" where the guide talked about all this and even took us to some vaults under the bridge. It is so sad to hear about the greed of some people that caused so much suffering. Interrsting to note is that the decends of those poor people have moved on, had they been black or a different race they probly would be complaining about a racist history... but the fact is that history shows human beings did NOT discriminate based on race, they just discriminated because they could. Humans have been and can be totally cruel to anyone.

    I was coming back from work driving from raf upper heyford old air base whilist on my hands free phone i heard broken voices on my phone it sounded like someone over a radio giving out coordinate information but they were shouting it out. I found out that 2 airmen were killed near the airfield as they crashed near the road near the airbase. It was very scary

    My cousin went out to LA at the tale end of the depression to seek her fortune as a actress and her and her parents stayed in a old slum house that was remodeled into a 25$ a month flop house..she eventually found work but if the walls of that place could talk

      Interesting! There were many lodging houses there apparently, though flop house would be a better term for some.

      @@FactFeast yeah but I've seen pictures of the place she was in it actually was a nice old Victorian and was cleaned up and I think turned in to cheap lodging for students and poor folks or actors looking for a break..she obviously did ok for herself since Linda Darnell was ranked as one of the top old actresses of the golden age of Hollywood and she came along way from the family farm and that flop house..but you could tell from the photo it was like a 1850/60s house and the area was rough but it was apparently safe and affordable when her and her folks lived there but I can imagine it was a dump in its hay day lol my grandpa said it was a brothel house during the gold rush . before getting cleaned up in the 20s and knowing my grandpa that might not be too far fetched he was a character but you knew you could trust him and believe him even if it sounded like bs 9 times outta 10 it was always the truth and I like your workhouse and Victorian England videos we have many kin that could have been in your videos end up in the states..
